According to a new study, eating citrus foods like oranges and grapefruits may help you to reduce depression.

Scientists looked at the diets and mental health of more than 32,000 people and found a link between eating citrus fruits and having less sadness.

This finding could help people improve their mental health by making small changes to what they eat.

The Study

Researchers from Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital looked at data from the Nurses’ Health Study II.

This data showed a lot of details about people’s mental health and eating habits. A smaller group of people were also given extra tests by having their gut bugs and blood samples studied.

Key Findings

The study found that people who ate more citrus foods were 22% less likely to become depressed. Gut bacteria, especially a good bacteria called Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, were related to this link.

This bacteria was found in smaller amounts in the digestive systems of people who were depressed.

Scientists think that eating citrus foods might raise the number of these good bacteria, which would then be good for mental health.

How Citrus Fruits Affect the Gut and Brain

Vitamin C and flavonoids, which are natural plant substances, are two important nutrients that citrus fruits have.

Naringenin is one of these flavonoids that seems to help bacteria in the gut make something called S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM).

This substance is very important for making chemicals in the brain that help control feelings and mood, such as serotonin and dopamine.

A gene called MAOA, which breaks down serotonin and dopamine, was also found to be lower in people who had more Faecalibacterium prausnitzii.

This means that having more of this good bacteria might help the body keep healthy amounts of these important chemicals that control mood.

Why This Matters

Depression is a big health problem all over the world, and many people don’t get better with medicine.

The results show that what you eat may have a big effect on your mental health. Citrus fruits may help your brain work better and lower your risk of sadness naturally.

Experts’ Opinions

The researchers think that these results need to be confirmed by more research. As part of a good diet, they do tell people to eat more fruits, especially citrus fruits.

Additionally, they say that in the future, probiotics with Faecalibacterium prausnitzii could be created to help treat sadness.

Conclusion

This study tells us more about how gut bugs and what you eat may affect your mental health.

Even though citrus fruits can’t cure sadness on their own, eating them as part of a healthy diet might be a simple way to improve your mental health.

Scientists hope that these results will lead to more study and better ways to treat depression.
