A favorite Mexican breakfast dish, chilaquiles verdes, might be good for your heart.Β

The main ingredient in this dish, tomatillos, makes the salsa very high in antioxidants.Β

Tomatillos have a lot of vitamin C, which might help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

On top of that, don't forget that the garlic, onions, and peppers in salsa are all good for you because they reduce inflammation.

Whole grain corn tortilla chips are used in chilaquiles. They have fiber in them, which may help with cholesterol and blood sugar.

Eggs, which are often added, are good for your heart because they have protein, vitamin B, and fats.

You should know, though, that this food is usually fried, which means it has fats that are bad for you.Β

The fact that it's full of cheese, sour cream, and other fatty dairy products is bad enough. These toppings make the heart-healthy stuff irrelevant. Β

Baking tortilla chips, using less cheese and dairy, and adding fresh veggies like onion, cilantro, and avocado make chilaquiles healthier. Β Β
